I'm sitting here in my new apartment, feeling adrenaline coursing through my veins as though I just scored the winning shot in (insert sport here). The victory, however, was entirely psychological. I went to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles for the second time today, after a first visit that brought me to my knees. I was armed with every possible document that anyone could ask me for, including my car title, my passport, my birth certificate, my lease, my credit card, and my checkbook. And this time, I emerged triumphant, with my new Massachusetts tags and my new Massachusetts (temporary) license in hand. LaDarrell, if you are reading this, you provided excellent customer service, and I thank you.
I said to my husband, "I feel so powerful! I feel like I really showed Massachusetts who's boss." To which he replied, "Yes, by paying them $225 to register your car and get a license." That painful truth aside, I am deeply relieved to have this psychologically draining task behind me. With my former tags lovingly tucked away for safekeeping, I'm one step closer to settling in here in MA. Having said that, tonight, I will celebrate with this:
